Louis Vuitton Lizard
We received a late call for this rather handsome Gecko who was picked up from the Poplar area near Canary Wharf.
This little one was found in a Louis Vuitton shoe box by some bins. Fortunately, the finder took this little beauty to a vet who called for further assistance. As you can see this Gecko is shedding and will need some feeding up before he is looking for a new home.
Please please please do contact a rescue before even getting to the point of abandonment. There are plenty of us out there all willing to help in whatever way we can abandonment isn't an option for creatures like this the simply cannot survive the temperatures in the UK.
Maxine the Chinchilla
Maxine is a 9 year old Chinchilla who came into the rescue as she injured her leg and her previous owners were unable to provide the treatment she required. She was a very loved pet, but her previous owner felt the best option for her was to come to Moonstone Rescue for the treatment she requires. An emergency vet gave Maxine medication, and after investigations, it was found that she has very badly broken her back leg in several places as she got her leg caught in the grate of her previous cage. After long discussions with our specialist vets we were left with 2 options. Option 1 was to put her to sleep, and option 2 was to amputate her leg. At Moonstone Rescue, we will do everything and anything we possibly can to ensure every animal we come across has the best chance of a happy and healthy life, and both the team and the vets have agreed that providing she recovers well from the amputation, she will go on to live a very happy and potentially long life as apart from this injury, she is in amazing condition. The team have been and will be working around the clock to ensure she is pain-free and comfortable to prepare for her operation. We are also currently working on her new enclosure which will accommodate her new way of living on one level instead of a several level cage once she has recovered from her operation.
Pat the Ferret
We'd like to tell you about Patricia's story. Unfortunately as a kit (baby ferret), Patricia found herself and her 4 brothers and sisters at the mercy of the local woodlands in Hemel Hempstead. Thankfully due to a kind hearted local woodlands worker, they were found in a wooden box with nothing more than a tin of cat food that had been eaten way before he'd arrived. Due to his swift action on calling us, each and every one of these gorgeous babies were saved. As you can see, Patricia is not particularly big which we and the vets believe is due to lack of food / malnourishment when she was born. All have now been homed and due to Patricia's pre existing conditions, is now the resident ferret at Moonstone Rescue. Patricia is the kindest, sweetest, most gentle little girl who wants nothing more than to have cuddles and give kisses. Each person who meets her (even people who are scared), fall in love with her due to her cuteness and soft approach.
The Bunny Sisters
Introducing our 2 little 6 month old bunny's who came into the rescue this evening due to their old owners not being able to look after them anymore. We believe they were not handled often and are scared of people due to this. They are very shy and very nervous, but with some time and tlc, they will come round. They are with a loving foster family who are working with them to show them that they do not need to be scared of people.
Tom the Parrot
Tom came into the rescue as he was left at a pet shop due to his previous owner unfortunately passing away. The only information we were given was that his name is Tom and he is a Parrot. After a long time working with Tom to understand his personality, what he likes/dislikes, and overcoming his initial fear of change as he was very anxious in his new home at the start, he has really turned around. We are not where we want to be with him yet, but sometimes, rehabilitation can take a long time - in some cases this is a matter of days or weeks, and other cases it can be years as it is with Tom. Tom loves listening to Vera Lynn and loves to sing along to old time classics . He loves dancing when he has a shower which just shows how sweet he really is. He isn't keen on women and we believe this could be linked to him missing his previous owner as she was an elderly lady. It may be a long time before Tom is fully comfortable to be handled, but this isn't an issue for us at Moonstone Rescue as we will continue to work with him for however long it takes, as we do with every animal we come across.
The Fish Pond
Unfortunately their owner has been taken ill and was unable to maintain their pond anymore. This again was passed onto us by another rescue who needed assistance in getting these beautiful koi carp a new home. As you'll see these amazing fish are fairly large and require a large size pond to maintain their health which we have been able to give them. Fun fact about koi carp : Koi or more specifically nishikigoi, are colored varieties of the Amur carp that are kept for decorative purposes in outdoor koi ponds or water gardens. Well done to everyone involved with this - teamwork makes the dream work!
